Core Principles
Empathy Before Consequences: Adults respond to poor choices with genuine empathy rather than anger, lectures, or threats, turning mistakes into learning opportunities. [1, 2]
Shared Control Through Choices: Adults offer small, manageable choices within safe limits to satisfy a child's need for autonomy and prevent power struggles. [1]
Shared Thinking: Adults ask guiding questions (such as "What do you think you will do about that?") so children solve their own problems instead of relying on adults to rescue them. [1, 2]
Maintaining Dignity: Adults preserve the child's self-concept by separating the behavior from the child's inherent value. [1]
The Two Basic Rules
Set firm limits in loving ways: Adults establish clear boundaries without resorting to anger, warnings, or nagging.
Hand problems back: When a child creates a problem, the adult lovingly lets the child own and solve it while experiencing natural or logical consequences. (click 1 and 2 for more info) [1, 2]
